And when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
I Corinthians 11:24 NKJV
Why was Jesus’ body broken?
When a law is broken there must be punishment or the law is of no effect. God gave us His law but humans were incapable of keeping that law. We wasted no time in murdering, stealing, coveting, committing adultery, worshiping false gods, and anything else you can think of. That lawlessness demanded a response from a just God.
But how could humans stand under the judgement of a holy and righteous God? We couldn’t and that’s why from the time the law was given, it set in motion Jesus coming here and standing in our place.
The law was part of the old covenant God made with Israel. The law demanded fulfilment. So, when Jesus stood in our place, He didn’t do away with the law, He fulfilled it and established a new covenant. He fulfilled a physical covenant based on law and punishment and established a new spiritual covenant based on grace and mercy.
The law was broken so, He who was perfect and whole was broken so that we who are broken can be made whole.
Are you feeling broken right now? Are you feeling crushed and ground to dust by life?
Spend some time in God’s word and God will meet you there.
